Question: What am I supposed to be thinking of while meditating?

Ah… that’s the point. You should be finding the spaces BETWEEN thoughts. As you sit, watch as thoughts form. Instead of your normal process of creating a secondary thought (a related thought that follows, starting a chain), try letting that thought go. Imagine you are sitting at the bottom of a cool, placid lake. Bubbles (thoughts) rise from the bottom. Watch them rise to the surface, popping and dissipating, without touching them.

Pay attention to when the spaces between the thoughts arise. As you start to notice them, they will get larger. Notice how relaxing your quiet mind is. Notice how when you aren’t thinking, there isn’t a “you” there.

If you start to get this far along, consider finding a teacher to work with.
